LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police said two separate break-ins involving the thefts of dogs and exotic birds were connected.

Police said two white French bulldog puppies, a gray Schnauzer puppy and a black Yorkshire terrier puppy were taken from a pet store in the 6800 block of S. Rainbow Boulevard about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

Several hours later, about 3:59 a.m., a break-in at the Acrylic Tank Manufacturing near Decatur Boulevard and Warm Springs Road resulted in the loss of a cockatoo and three macaws, along with four bearded dragon reptiles.

Metro police later on Monday released surveillance video from both break-ins.

The birds are valued at $6,000 altogether, business co-owner Wayde King said. King said a rock was thrown through a glass door of the business in the burglary.

According to police, one suspect may be in his late teens to early 20s. He wore a light colored hooded sweat shirt, denim shorts and a white baseball hat.

A second suspect, who was also described in his late teens to early 20s, wore a long-sleeved shirt, light colored basketball shorts and a white baseball hat.

King's business is noted for being featured in the Animal Planet series Tanked. The show features King and co-owner Brett Raymer building large scale, custom tanks for big time clients, according to the series' website.

According to King, the birds taken from Acrylic Tank Manufacturing included:

  • 8-month-old Umbrella Cockatoo named Avalanche.
  • 6-month-old Blue & Gold Macaw named Sapphire. King said Sapphire is considered handicap and has a leg defect.
  • 2-year-old Harligold Macaw named Tequila.
  • 3-and-a-half-year-old Green Wing Macaw named Porsche.

King, an admitted animal lover, said at least two of the birds may not be able to survive if they are not properly cared.

He also said he's kept one of the birds since it was born.

"I had one of [the birds] since he was out of the egg. He's like a baby. It's sad," King said Monday.

Police urge anyone with information on the incidents to contact Metro's Property Crimes Section at 702-828-4809 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555.
