Authorities in Genesee County say a snow squall has caused a multivehicle accident with several injuries, shutting down southbound U.S. 23, south of Flint, for much of Thursday afternoon.

The highway reopened to southbound and northbound traffic around 3:45 p.m.

Genesee County's central dispatch center said the crash closed southbound U.S. 23 in Grand Blanc Township.

More than 50 vehicles were involved, including four semi-trucks. Fourteen people received minor injuries. People were evacuated off the highway with MTA buses and taken to an area fire station to keep warm.

Thursday night, TV5 caught up with a woman who says she just avoided becoming part of the pileup. She says what she saw was a mess.

"Some of the cars weren't even visible to see what kind of cars they were, they were that impacted," said Sandy Reynolds, who lives in Burton.

US-23 Auto Care was one towing company called out to assist with the highway cleanup.  Donald Fee is the owner of the business, and he says his crew towed four cars off the road. He called it chaos.

"At one point, the police department kind of had to pull all of the tow truck drivers to the side and then start pointing them to the cars that they wanted out," said Fee.

Mundy Township Police Chief John Petres says his team will compare notes tomorrow and continue the investigation, but he believes it was just bad weather conditions that led to the accidents.

"There were a lot of people lucky tonight," Petres said in an interview with TV5.

That crash and another Thursday that closed part of Interstate 94 in southwestern Michigan came during a blast of winter weather that caused a multivehicle pileup on I-75 in Detroit. At least three died in that crash.

The Van Buren County sheriff's department says eight semis and six cars crashed on I-94, closing the westbound lanes to traffic at Paw Paw. There is no immediate word on injuries.

No further information is available. Lake-effect snow is making driving conditions in Genesee County very tricky.
