The Michigan State Spartans turned the ball over 14 times but still held on to beat the University of Illinois 80-75 Thursday night at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
Keith Appling scored 24 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out seven assists for the Spartans (18-4, 7-2).
Illinois (15-7, 2-6) were led by Tracy Abrams, who scored 16 points.
The Spartans still stand a half game out of first place in the Big Ten.
MSU next hosts the Minnesota Golden Gophers in East Lansing on Thursday, Feb. 6.
