GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A 3-year-old boy was killed in a shooting at a Greenville apartment complex Friday night, according to police.
The shooting happened about 7:45 p.m. at the Plantations at Haywood apartments on Haywood Road.
Police said the victim, identified by Deputy Coroner Jeff Fowler as Tmorej Smith, was playing with his 7-year-old sister in a bedroom with a pink handgun they thought was a toy.
While playing with the gun, Smith was shot, but police have not said who was holding the gun when he was shot. Fowler said he died from an accidental gun shot wound to the head.
Fowler said the death was immediate, though he could not comment on how the shooting occurred.
He said Smith lived in the apartment with his parents, 7-year-old sister and grandparents. At the time of the shooting, Fowler said the parents were not home and the grandparents were in the living room.
Greenville Police media relations officer Jonathan Bragg said they are still investigating the case. He said no one has been arrested or charged.
Bragg said the Greenville Police Department would like to stress the importance of gun safety, keeping firearms locked at all times and out of the reach of children. If anyone would like a gun lock, they can get one from the police department at 4 McGee St. in Greenville.
