Watch for unsafe ice on Saginaw Bay

Posted: Updated:

The U.S. Coast Guard is reporting dangerous ice conditions for Mid-Michigan's fishermen.

The Coast Guard conducted six rescues on the Saginaw Bay over the weekend. The organization says that as many as 10 people were rescued.

Around 9 p.m. Sunday night, officials responded to a situation about a mile north of Thomas Marina in Tuscola County. Six people were rescued during that incident. Not long after, officials also responded to another rescue on the Saginaw Bay, about four miles east of Parrish Road in Linwood. Four people were stranded on the ice and were rescued.

No one was injured.

WNEM has also received a report of an ice rescue that was taking place Monday morning near Brissette Beach and Kilarney Beach Roads.

With temperatures warming and rain on the way, the coast guard is urging local ice fishermen to be cautious.

A coast guard spokesperson says although the rain creates cracks in the ice, making it easier to see, it also means the ice is weaker. Snowmobilers and other ice-bound individuals should travel with tools, such as screwdrivers, which can be used to stick into the ice and propel yourself out of the water, if necessary.

He also recommends that anyone considering making a trip onto the ice take the necessary precautions, such as checking weather conditions and dressing appropriately.
