Las Vegas Constable John Bonaventura was arrested on Tuesday night and booked into Clark County Detention Center, according to jail records.
Bonaventura, 50, was booked on charges of DUI and speeding. He has since posted bail and has been released.
The Nevada Highway Patrol received a call at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday concerning a reckless driver on US 95 southbound near Boulder Highway. Troopers located Bonaventura's vehicle, pulled him over and performed a sobriety test on him, which he failed.
Bonaventura was driving a Ford Escape registered to Clark County when he was pulled over.
Bonaventura's arrest likely won't sit well with voters who put him in office. Nor does it sit well with county commissioners questioning whether Las Vegas needs a constable.
"It's clearly not good," said Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak. "The constable is arrested and charged with DUI. Everybody is entitled to their day in court. He will have his day in court to address the allegations that are made. There are concerns. One of them is the DUI. Secondly, he is driving an official vehicle."
Sisolak said because Bonaventura was pulled over in a county vehicle, his arrest poses liability and safety issues.
"If you are driving an official vehicle, I don't know if there are any weapons in the vehicle," said Sisolak. "I don't know if he's carrying a weapon. Those are questions that certainly have to be asked and need to be addressed in the interest of public safety. The public has a right to know. This isn't the constable's car, it's the taxpayer's car."
Bonaventura was elected in 2010 and tasked with overseeing 25 deputies who serve eviction notices, protection orders and liens. Recently, county leaders have questioned whether the sheriff's department or a private company could perform the same duties at less cost.
On Tuesday, the commission will start debate over the future of the constable's office and Bonaventura's $103,000/year salary.
