SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -
The Michigan Automobile Theft Prevention Authority has released its list of the most targeted vehicles for auto theft in Michigan and the automobile at the top of the list might surprise you.
The statistics were compiled from 2010 through 2011 and MATPA says since it's inception in 1986, auto thefts in Michigan have decreased by over 65 percent.
MICHIGAN'S MOST STOLEN--
- 2000 Dodge Caravan
- 2004 Chevrolet Impala
- 1997 Chevrolet Pickup
- 1997 Ford Taurus
- 2002 Dodge Intrepid
- 2005 Ford Pickup
- 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix
- 2011 Chevrolet Malibu
- 2002 Dodge Stratus
- 2003 Dodge Pickup

Be careful in July, as it is the most popular month of vehicle thefts. August is the second-most targeted month. Summer is especially popular with June and May being third and fourth on the list. October was fifth followed by September, November, April, December and January.
Thieves also seem to like Mondays, as it is the most popular day of the week that an automobile is stolen. Be careful early in the week as the second-most targeted day is Tuesday. Friday was third on the list followed by Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.
The MATPA report also states that vehicle thefts in Michigan are down 6.8 percent in 2011 from 2010.
