Police: Man mad at God confesses to vandalizing church

Posted: Updated:
BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities in Bay County said a 19-year-old Bay City man walked into the Bay County Sheriff's office and asked to speak with an officer.

The man told police he wanted to confess that he had started a fire inside one, and possibly a second, church in the Essexville-Hampton area.

Officers from the Essexville Public Safety department and Hampton Township Police Department investigated and found that two churches had been broken into. The First Baptist Church on Center Avenue and the Pilgrim Lutheran Church on Nebobish Avenue.

Inside the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, a small fire was found burning on the alter when officers arrived. The suspect told police he was mad at God and wanted to blow up the Baptist Church and burn the alter at the Lutheran Church.

Video and photos from inside one of the churches also shows red wine spilled about and burned carpets.

The man, who claims he acted alone, has been lodged in the Bay County Jail on several felony charges. He is expected to go before a judge sometime Wednesday.
