Students got fired up to stop bullying at Freeland middle school. Seventh grader Nathan Miller is glad his school, along with Kids Empowered and Monster Jam, teamed up for an anti-bullying assembly in the gym on Thursday.
"I think we did a good job. It's very important to do this so we can stop it, and how to get the bullies to actually stop and realize what mistake they are making," Miller said.
About 450 students attended the presentation focused on crushing bullying. And kids that WNEM.com talked to say they think the assembly made a difference.
"I thought it was really great. It definitely got students aware about bullying," Heather Miller said.
"When I see bullying I'll definitely say something and make sure people are stopping," said Alli Shea.
Monster Jam is in town for shows at the Dow Event Center in Saginaw this weekend. And company spokesman David Knisley says the idea of schools working with them to squash bullying is a good one.
"Freeland middle schools really got behind this. And this Crush Out Bullying with Kids Empowered is great. I'd like to see this expand. It would be great to see this happen everywhere," Knisley said.
After the assembly wrapped up, about a dozen lucky students got to go outside and do some spray-painting. Students wrote anti-bullying messages on a Lincoln Town Car. It will be pulverized by a monster truck at Friday night's show. Jackson Huckeby painted a bunch of happy faces on the vehicle.
"I think it's cool that they're going to go and crush it and it's like crushing away bullying," Huckeby said.
All of the students signed a pledge to stop bullying. It will be on display at the Dow Event Center during the shows. They are scheduled to take place Friday at 7:30 p.m. And Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Meanwhile Nathan Miller says he's hopeful the school will have more events like these in the future.
"We had a good time and we got our point across," Miller said
