PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A multi-millionaire Phoenix businessman in jail on suspicion of conspiring to have his wife killed was indicted Feb. 20 on two more counts of conspiracy to commit murder.
Fred B. Knadler, 75, and the owner of Arizona Shower Door has been in the Maricopa County Lower Buckeye Jail since January 2012.
Homicide detectives recently learned Knadler had asked someone to help him try again and kill his wife and a key suspect in the case, according to Sgt. Steve Martos of the Phoenix Police Department.
An undercover police detective met with Knadler, who offered to pay $10,000 to have a 66-year-old woman and 45-year-old man killed, Martos said.
"It goes to show how dedicated this individual is to try to influence not just the outcome of the trial, but once again, getting back at his wife," said Martos. "When information was divulged that Mr. Knadler was again looking to hire someone to kill two key witnesses in the original conspiracy to commit murder case, once we became involved, we sent an undercover detective to meet with Mr. Knadler while in jail."
In November 2011, CBS 5 News aired a story about Knadler claiming $250,000 worth of gold coins were stolen from his office.
Knadler claimed he had put the coins under his desk, but they were not locked up. He said when he came back from a summer vacation, they were missing.
Two months before that, in September, court records show Knadler's wife of 18 years, Libby Knadler, filed for divorce. Police characterized it as a contentious relationship.
According to court records and confirmed by Libby Knadler to CBS 5 News, Libby Knadler was negotiating a settlement worth approximately $2 million. Libby Knadler said the settlement was to be over 15 years and that she never wanted to "break" Fred Knadler's business.
She told CBS 5 News that she simply couldn't live with Fred Knadler anymore. "I was being treated like a slave," she said.
Phoenix police allege Fred Knadler was going to kill his wife and conspired in that murder plot with another person about disposing of her body and vehicle.
Fred Knadler is being held on a cash-only bond.
Edward Novak represents Libby Knadler.
Novak said that Libby Knadler is afraid for her life and worried that her husband will eventually find someone who can get the job done and kill her.
"She lives in constant fear," said Novak. "She was concerned that if he could reach out from the jail to hire someone while he's still in the jail, what's to prevent him from reaching out again?"
Authorities said that extra security measures will be taken at the Durango Jail, where Fred Knadler is staying, to reduce the number of visitors he has and who Fred Knadler has contact with.
