FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Office of Aeronautics has named MBS International Airport in Freeland as Michigan Airport of the Year.
The annual awards recognize outstanding service to Michigan aviation.
The award to MBS International Airport salutes the airport's new $55 million terminal that opened in October 2012, nearly a year ahead of schedule.
The terminal "benefits not only the Midland, Bay City and Saginaw areas, but the entire Michigan airport system," the award reads. "Using innovative funding and community relations strategies, the airport has provided an exceptional facility that will continue to enhance the economic viability of its service area for years to come."
This is the 22nd year that the MDOT Office of Aeronautics has presented the awards.
