Saginaw City Hall without heat for second straight day

Posted: Updated:
SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

For the second straight day, Saginaw City Hall is operating without heat. The building is still open but some departments are only partially staffed, so expect longer waiting times for any services needed.

We've received word that an older boiler in the building malfunctioned in early February. The building relies on two boilers systems in order to heat the facility. One of those boilers was replaced a few years ago. The boiler that broke down was around 30 years old.

When the older boiler broke down, maintenance personnel were able to separate the older boiler from the newer boiler. The building was then being heated by the newer boiler. The newer boiler then broke down because of the stress of heating the entire building.

Aging pipes and steam lines also contributed to the shutdown.

Maintenance personnel are working to fix the problem but there is no word as to when heat will return to the facility. City Manager Darnell Early expects the problem to persist because of limited funding. He says the facility must be restored before the problems can be fully alleviated.

In the meantime, expect to encounter longer wait times for any services provided at City Hall.
