BRECKENRIDGE, MI (WNEM) -

A building that many Gratiot County residents have fond memories of, has been torn down after serving the public as an education institution for more than 70 years.

Breckenridge West Elementary School met the wrecking ball Monday. The building will be demolished over the next couple of weeks.

The facility was built in several phases and was completed in 1936. The building served as an elementary school until January 1995, when a new elementary school was built. The building then served as a community education facility until November 2009.

The building was torn down because of safety issues.
