"One hundred percent of the money raised by this golf tournament and silent auction will go directly to a post-doctoral training fellowship at Scripps Florida, aimed at developing better treatments and, ultimately a cure for this disease that strikes 1 out of 6 American men," said BallenIsles MGA Tournament Chair and fundraiser Burt Rein.

The prostate cancer research project will be led by Associate Professor Kendall Nettles who joined Scripps Florida in 2005.

"In collaboration with Dr. John Katzenellenbogen, a renowned steroid receptor chemist at the University of Illinois, we have identified novel compounds that effectively inhibit steroid receptors.  Studies indicate that these agents are effective against many human malignancies, including prostate cancer," Professor Nettles said.

The Nettles laboratory is well known for the development of high-throughput crystallography to identify the structures of steroid receptors such as the androgen receptor, the male sex hormone that drives the development of prostate cancer.

Using the latest cutting-edge technologies, researchers at Scripps Florida focus on basic biomedical research and drug discovery. Over 500 full-time faculty members, scientific, technical, and administrative staff work at the 350,000-square-foot campus, which is comprised of three state-of-the-art research buildings.

BallenIsles www.BallenIsles.org is highly regarded for its 3 championship golf courses, where many golf legends originally qualified for the PGA Tour, and Jack Nicklaus and Julius Boros won PGA Championships. It's also home to a $26 million state-of-the-art Sports Complex that is testimony to the Club's extraordinary commitment to a healthy member lifestyle. Out of nearly 200 Clubs managed worldwide by Troon Golf, BallenIsles has been awarded the distinction "Facility of the Year".
