OTTAWA, KS (KCTV) -
Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Curry made his first court appearance Wednesday as he continues to resist calls for his resignation.
Curry and one of his top deputies, Jerrod Fredricks, were arrested last week. Both men were charged with interfering with a law enforcement investigation, which is a felony charge. Curry was also cited for official misconduct, which is a misdemeanor.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigations is refusing to discuss the charges. Authorities are seeking Curry's ouster.
Some Franklin County residents say that Curry should step aside while others say he is innocent until proven guilty and should be allowed to continue to serve.
"If you've got charges that he did something wrong, I want him out," resident Noble Carter said. "But if you don't, I want it to be over."
A preliminary hearing on the criminal charges will be held April 1 for both men. An ouster hearing for Curry will be held later this month.
Former Butler County District Court Judge John Sanders is overseeing the cases as a special judge. It is considered a conflict of interest for the Franklin County prosecutor to prosecute the Franklin County sheriff.
