Tuition breaks for illegal immigrants draw support

Posted: Updated:

Presidents of Arizona's three state universities say they favor providing tuition breaks to young illegal immigrants enrolled in the Obama administration's deferred-deportation program.

No proposal is yet on the table but the Arizona Daily Star reports that the presidents of the University of Arizona, Arizona State University and Northern Arizona University all voice support.

Illegal immigrants attending the state universities now must pay non-resident tuition rates that are much higher than those for state residents.

ASU President Michael Crow has said the Board of Regents will consider options on the issue during upcoming meetings.

An execution order by Gov. Jan Brewer declares that the young people in the program are still in the country illegally and should not receive driver's licenses or "any taxpayer-funded public benefits."
