Thanks to millage, Flint hires 7 new police officers

Posted: Updated:

Flint now has seven new police officers on the job thanks to a public safety millage passed by voters last November.

The seven officers are the first of 10 new hires planned with the millage and have been on the job since last week. The city says it is planning another recruitment drive to hire three additional officers along with backfilling any vacancies.

"We had eight candidates who made it through every qualification; however, one of those candidates decided to go elsewhere for employment," said Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock. "We're not done yet, we still plan on hiring more officers in the near future."

City officials said due to the initial hiring requirement of having already been certified by the State of Michigan for law enforcement work or the ability to be certified, the hiring pool of qualified candidates was somewhat limited.

Flint's next step is to hold a recruitment drive by working with a local college which will set up a police academy when the city has gathered sufficient interest from its efforts. City officials said a date for that recruitment drive has not yet been set.
