Candidates selected for vacant state Senate seat

Posted: Updated:
GENESEE COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Two candidates will face off for a Michigan Senate seat.

The winners are Jim Ananich from the Democratic party and Robert Daunt from the Republican party.

A special primary election was held in Genesee County Tuesday night.

Ananich and Daunt will now face off in a May 7 election.

A spot was left open after Sen. John Gleason left in the middle of his term to become Genesee County Clerk.

No local elections had been scheduled to be held until August, making a general special election unlikely until November. But Republican Governor Rick Snyder says it's in the best interest of residents to fill Gleason's seat sooner so they have representation.

Republicans hold a 26-11 majority in the Senate.
