LANDRUM, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Deputies said they are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy after a dresser fell on him and his sister, killing him and injuring her.
Greenville County deputies said they were called to a home in Landrum off of Highway 414 about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after the boy was found unresponsive.
Deputies said the boy and a 4-year-old girl were playing in a bedroom when a piece of furniture fell on them. They said both children were taken to the hospital with injuries, but the boy did not survive.
Coroner Kent Dill told FOX Carolina that a wooden chest of drawers fell over on top of Chandler Jerome Shaver and his sister. Dill said paramedics were first called at 11:23 p.m. and the boy died at Greer Memorial Hospital about an hour later.
Dill said he could not release the boy's cause or manner of death yet, but he has ruled the preliminary cause of death as compressional asphyxia, saying the weight of the dresser made it nearly impossible for him to breathe.
Master Deputy Laura Campbell said the girl was removed from the home and placed into Department of Social Services care because the living conditions were unacceptable for a child.
