Former Saginaw Mayor dead at 96

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Former Saginaw Mayor Paul H. Wendler has died at the age of 96.

Current Saginaw Mayor Greg Branch alerted TV5 to the sad news.

Wendler served as Saginaw's Mayor from 1971 to 1973. Wendler served an extended term as Mayor of the city because elections had moved from April to November during his term.

The Wendler Arena inside of the Dow Event Center is named for the former Mayor. Wendler oversaw the construction of the Dow Event Center, which was originally known as the Saginaw Civic Center, in 1972.

Wendler was involved in may activities, including the Michigan United Conservation Club and the National Wildlife Federation.
