CORUNNA, MI (WNEM) -

As the men and women, soldiers, filed into the packed gymnasium, they received a standing ovation from an overflow of family and friends at Corunna High School Sunday.

They were there for a departure ceremony for the Michigan Army National Guard 144th Military Police Company.

More than 100 soldiers from all over Michigan are a part of this unit headed off to Afghanistan.

They could be gone up to a year, with nine months of that time spent in Afghanistan.

"We're grateful for the support of so many people, not only from this community, but also from across the state of Michigan and across the country for what they do to help soldiers and to demonstrate their support for what we do," said Lt. Col. Scott Hiipakka of the U.S. Army.
