Saginaw School Board votes to close three schools

Posted: Updated:

An emotional meeting ended with a decision to close Jerome Elementary, Longfellow Elementary and Arthur Eddy Academy. The Saginaw Public School board voted 4-3 in favor of the plan.

Parents, students and staff pleaded with the board to keep the schools open. People stormed out of the three-hour-long meeting when the decision came down to close three schools.

Superintendent Carlton Jenkins said the plan is estimated to save $3.8 million. The district is facing a $32.6 million budget deficit. Jenkins said about 60 staff members could be laid off as part of the plan.

Students from Jerome Elementary will go to Merrill Park Elementary, Longfellow Elementary students will attend Houghton Elementary, and Arthur Eddy students will go to either Heavenrich or Ruben Daniels.

The closures will take effect during the next academic year. In the past 10 years, the district has shuttered 13 schools.

Board member Delena Spates-Allen explained it was a necessary decision, but one she didn't want to make.

The superintendent also presented ideas to improve academics and curriculum.
