Spartans, Wolverines advance in NCAA Tournament

AUBURN HILLS, MI (WNEM) -

The Spartans and Wolverines have both advanced to the third round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament with impressive victories Thursday.

Michigan State started off the day with a 65-54 win over Valparaiso. Derrick Nix scored 23 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in one of his best games as a Spartan. MSU overmatched Valpo, out-rebounding the Crusaders 44-20.

The Spartans play Memphis in the third round of the tournament Saturday. Memphis squeaked by St. Mary's College, 54-52.

Saturday's game tips off at 2:45 p.m.

Michigan survived a tough game against South Dakota State but the Wolverines came away with a 71-56 win. Glenn Robinson III and Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Wolverines with 21 points each, and Mitch McGary added 13 to fuel Michigan's attack.

The Jackrabbits were led by Brayden Carlson's 20 points, but SDSU could never get over the hump.

Michigan will take on VCU on Saturday. The game is set to tip off at 12:15 p.m. The Rams advanced by blowing out Akron, 88-42.

Plenty of tickets remain for Saturday's games. According to StubHub.com, the cheapest seat was listed at $102.99. Tickets were priced all the way up to $168.00.
