PHOENIX (CBS5) -
Christopher Alejo walked in for his jailhouse interview Monday wearing handcuffs with his feet wrapped in chains.
The 4th Avenue Jail inmate wasted no time trying to set the record straight about a murder case he's been connected to.
"People that know me, know I didn't do this," said Alejo.
Alejo, 43, is a career criminal with a long history of convictions involving theft, drugs and robbery.
However, Alejo told CBS 5 News that he was not involved in a recent murder and did not try to cover it up.
"How would you feel if your kids look at the TV and they see their father portrayed as a murderer or a robber?" Alejo said. "I'm still kind of numb, shocked, wondering what the hell is going on. I've done some bad things, but not this."
Police said that Alejo showed up at a Mesa apartment complex last week, where his girlfriend's daughter lived.
A man had been murdered inside one of the apartments, police said.
According to court records, Alejo is accused of taking $80 from the victim's pockets and then helped "roll the body in bedding before carrying it to the truck."
The records stated that the body was later dumped in the desert on the Salt River Reservation where "Alejo poured gasoline on the body and set it ablaze."
"Those are just lies," Alejo said. "I never did that."
Alejo told CBS 5 News that he simply showed up at the apartment and left, having no idea there was a dead body inside.
"God is my witness, I had nothing to do with this killing or burying them," said Alejo.
Alejo has been charged with theft, concealing a dead body and hindering prosecution.
