Auto insurance rates on the rise in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Michigan already has one of the highest car insurances rates in the country, and now it's getting worse as premiums are going up again.

The idea of paying more for car insurance is frustrating one for Mid-Michigan resident Sue Marshall. "My daughter sells insurance, and even she says its beginning to be a problem for her even," said Marshall.

Unfortunately, your pockets will soon be even lighter, when insurance rates jump by another $11.

The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association say the reason for the increase is that more people are expected to be seriously injured in car accidents this year.

Michigan drivers already pay more than most states for auto insurance. According to, Michigan has the second-highest rates in the country.

"My sister just moved back from Indiana. She can't believe (what) she has to pay now moving back a few months ago, and I said, 'Well, welcome to Michigan.' We love the state, but you just can't keep raising things like that," said Marshall.

According to state records, the average no-fault claim has increased dramatically in the past 12 years, up to $44,000 last year. The next highest state is New Jersey at $17,000 per claim.
