Brad Kloha remembers watching his grandmother lose her battle Alzheimer's disease. She died in 2011.
"She was someone who I had grown up with and loved so much. Now she looked at me blankly like I was a stranger. It was extremely hard. I had a helpless feeling that I couldn't do anything at the time," Kloha said.
But he's doing something now. He's lacing up his shoes, attempting to complete 100 races in 52 weeks, trying to raise $1 million to fight the disease.
"This is my opportunity to help support the Alzheimer's Association who does such great work in research, advocacy, education," Kloha said.
Kloha plans on finishing his journey to 100 races in June of next year. Just a few days shy of the three year anniversary of his grandmother's passing.
"When I cross the finish line of that 100th race and know that I've hit that mark, it will definitely be the biggest thing I've ever done," Kloha said.
Kloha will compete in distances anywhere from 5 kilometers to 28 miles. Most races will have obstacle courses. He plans to knock out two to three of them each weekend starting June 15.
Kloha is hoping to find some sponsors to help cover the cost of entry fees and travel to the events. Meanwhile every penny he raises will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association. Until then, the training continues, as he plans to honor his grandmother's memory doing what he does best: racing for a cause that will make a difference in the lives of so many.
"No matter what it takes, whether I'm hurting, tired - I'm going to complete the 100 races because it's too important not to," Kloha said.
So far Brad has already raised $4,000. If you'd like to donate to his cause, go to the hotlinks section of our homepage.
