City commissioners to consider new pet ordinance

Posted: Updated:
BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

A new ordinance could affect how many animals you can own in Bay City.

City commissioners will get a first look at the proposed ordinance language during a meeting Monday night.

The proposed ordinance would limit the number of dogs and cats a person could have to three each, and it would require that the pet be at least 6 months old or older.

Bay City zoning officials will present a first draft of the ordinance to city commissioners at 7:30 p.m. In addition to the limits on the number of domestic animals, the ordinance would also ban residents from having livestock and farm animals on their property.

There currently is an animal ordinance on the books, but city officials say it lacks a way for authorities to address concerns of blight, odors, feces and noise. Zoning officials said the proposed ordinance is in response to a number of complaints of residents with numerous cats, chickens, ducks, geese and crowing roosters.

The proposed ordinance does have some exemptions for display farm animals and livestock such as those at the Bay County Fair Grounds, and for horse-drawn carriage operators.

The meeting will be held at the Pere Marquette Depot in Bay City. WNEM.com and TV5 will have full coverage of the event and we'll let you know about any changes to the ordinance.

Meanwhile, another meeting is being held tonight in Bay County to address policies at the Bay County Humane Society.

The Humane Society's president will hold a presentation to try to gain support and convince Bay County officials to adopt a no-kill policy.

The meeting is being held at the Alice and Jack Wirt Public Library in Bay City. Another is planned for April 22.
