Thief accused of stealing school bus batteries

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A man is accused of stealing batteries out of school buses in Nashville but ran out of gas while trying to escape.

Two employees showed up for work Monday morning at the district bus lot on Woodycrest Avenue while the alleged burglar, later identified as Brian Lee Tomberlin, was trying to get away.

The workers blocked the exit until police arrived, but Tomberlin didn't get far since his van was out of gas.

"The man in the van approached the officer with the gas can, but the officer told the man to come over and took the gas can from him," said witness Patrick Bembry.

Police searched Tomberlin's vehicle and say they found seven stolen bus batteries worth approximately $931.

Used batteries are commonly stolen for a number of reasons, including selling them for scrap. Each battery could bring in about $5 to $10.

Also, the sulfuric acid inside the batteries can be used in the manufacture of meth.

Whatever Tomberlin's motive, he ran out of fumes before he ever got that far.

Tomberlin now faces theft of property charges. Police said he's been charged for theft-related crimes at least eight other times in the past.
