Trial set in botched pot robbery in Surprise

Posted: Updated:
SURPRISE, AZ (AP) -

A July 23 trial has been set for two people accused of participating in a marijuana robbery in Surprise that ended with the death of one man.

Court records show 29-year-old Jesse Gillen and 30-year-old Stephanie Conley pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the Aug. 6 death of Shawn Ryan at a home where hundreds of marijuana plants were found.

A man living at the house told police he was shot after refusing to sell marijuana to three men who had come to his home and presented fake medical marijuana cards.

Police say a knife fight then ensued among the wounded man and Ryan, and Ryan died at the scene.

Gillen and Conley told police they were kidnapped and forced to take part in the robbery.
