A Las Vegas man is sitting in Clark County Detention Center, accused of dousing his wife in gasoline and attempting to set her on fire.
Christian Ellis, 40, was arrested on Monday and is charged with attempted murder.
Metro police received a call just after 7 p.m. on Monday from Ellis' son, identified in a police report only as Nicolas, concerning a verbal argument between his parents that had turned violent.
When police arrived, they found Ellis' wife of 18 years, identified in the police report only as Melissa, doused in gasoline.
Ellis briefly barricaded himself inside his home on Villa Pulido Street, near Grand Teton Street and Cimarron Road in the north valley, before surrendering.
According to police, the incident began when Ellis and his wife got into an argument when Melissa attempted to keep her husband from driving drunk.
Melissa told police Ellis had been distraught since losing his job a week earlier due to a DUI arrest. When Ellis became violent, Melissa locked him in the garage, the report states.
Ellis allegedly kicked the garage door down, grabbed a gallon drum of gasoline and a blowtorch and doused his wife in gasoline, saying, "I know how much you love this house. I'm going to burn it down."
When Melissa knocked the blowtorch out of Ellis' hand, he tried setting her aflame with a cigarette lighter, the report says.
Melissa and her son were able to flee the house, largely unharmed.
