A man with a suspended license due to a DUII arrest told deputies at the scene of a rollover crash that a stranger was driving him home from the bar and had taken off running.
Investigators, however, said there was no mystery man.
Matthew Holman, 30, is charged with DUII and assault.
Deputies were called to the 9000 block of Liberty Road South in Salem around 1:20 a.m. Thursday. A 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass was upside down in the middle of the road with a woman unconscious inside.
Deputies said Stephanie Woods, 30, of Salem, was taken to the hospital for treatment to head, neck and back injuries. A Salem Hospital spokesman said she has since been released.
Holman was not hurt in the crash. He told deputies that he was a passenger in the car, getting a ride home from a designated driver after a night of drinking at the bar.
Investigators said Holman claimed not to know the man's name and said the man ran away after the crash.
The car had left the roadway, grazed a tree and flipped upside down.
Further investigation revealed that Holman was the driver. Deputies said he ultimately admitted to that, but because he has a suspended driver's license from a previous DUII arrest, he also first said Woods was driving the car.
Holman said they were returning home from a night of drinking at a Salem bar, according to investigators, but deputies said they had already passed the turnoff for their house and continued driving another two miles before crashing.
Holman was wearing his seatbelt, but Woods was not, according to deputies.
The road was blocked for four hours after the crash.
Holman is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.
