A brand new Flint Police bomb squad truck.
FLINT, MI (WNEM) -
The Flint Police Bomb Squad is very excited about a brand new piece of gear they received earlier this year.
A Homeland Security Grant paid for a 2013 diesel truck retrofitted with an interior designed specifically for bomb squads.
"It has everything we need," said Flint Bomb Squad Cmdr. Collin Birnie. "It's got specific compartments built to store specific bomb equipment. It has a built in generator and inverter, so no matter where we are we'll always have full electricity and power."
This isn't the first time the squad has received grant from Homeland Security.
In 2011, a grant paid for a more heavy-duty bomb robot, one that is larger, stronger and can reach higher than their other robot, bringing the squad into the 21st century.
The squad not only covers the Flint and Genesee County, but also helps cover Homeland Security region three.
" There's 14 counties that comprise the region. Genesee being the south and it goes up to Oscoda to the north and all through the thumb," Birnie said.
