Arizona Senate rejects tougher teacher evaluations

PHOENIX (AP) -

The Arizona Senate has rejected a bill making it easier to fire some low-performing teachers.

HB2500 would have allowed experienced teachers to be placed on probationary status if they received the lowest rating on one yearly performance review. That status allows a school board to fire a teacher with little notice.

Democratic Sen. Steve Gallardo urged members not to support the measure. He said an overhaul of evaluations passed by the Legislature last year still isn't fully implemented and lawmakers should allow that to happen before passing additional legislation.

The House had previously passed the bill on a 50-7 vote. Two Republicans joined all 13 Senate Democrats in rejecting the bill Thursday. The bill may be brought up for another vote this session.
