Misleading Craigslist ad makes one home seller feel uneasy

Posted: Updated:

Selling a home shouldn't be this difficult.

That's what we're hearing from a Newburgh family receiving unexpected and unwelcome attention from a fake post on Craigslist.

For Melissa McCutchan, selling her home has been nothing short of a nightmare.

"I didn't know it could happen and I found out shockingly yesterday and it's been a nightmare ever since," says McCutchan.

The 'for sale' sign has been up for less than two weeks.

It's all the time it took for a fake Craigslist post, advertising the McCutchan's Newburgh home as a rental property.

"It's listed as an extremely low rental rate with all the utilities included, free trash pickup," says McCutchan. "Just too good to be true."

The fake offer has people coming by the car full.

Parents looking in windows, kids playing in the yard.

One man even came inside.

"I thought someone was breaking into our home," says McCutchan. "I didn't know what to do. I basically told him to get out of my house and he was flabbergasted and just said that he was responding to the ad on Craigslist."

The ad asks for a security deposit and personal information, everything down to your children's names.

It's something the McCutchans realtor has seen for three years now, but Melissa, it was something she never saw coming.

"I think there needs to be something done to stop it," says McCutchan. "There has to be something done."

Both the Sheriff's department and her realtor have suggested the family stay home for now, letting people know what they've seen isn't what it looks like and for McCutchan, she just wants life back to normal.

The Warrick County Sheriff's Department couldn't comment on the problem, only saying the investigation is ongoing.

The realtor tells 14 News that she has flagged the ad on Craigslist as span and it should be taken down.
