Dan Kildee returns from Afghanistan same day as deadly attacks

Posted: Updated:

Several Americans were killed in Afghanistan in several attacks Saturday.

In the south, three U.S. service members, two U.S. civilians, and an Afghan doctor died when a suicide bomber detonated a cartful of explosives as a convoy drove by.

Another American civilian was killed in an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan. The attacks happened on the same day a local congressman returned from an unannounced visit to the war-torn country.

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee was part of a three-member delegation that met with U.S. forces and held discussions with U.S. and Afghan officials about issues affecting the region.

The Flint Township democrat left for Afghanistan on Monday, but was asked not to announce his trip because of safety concerns.

While in Afghanistan, Kildee attended a small memorial service for his cousin, army specialist Joseph Dennis Johnson, who was only 24 when he died.

The Carman-Ainsworth graduate was killed in June 2010 by an improvised explosive device. Johnson lived in Mundy Township.
