Delta College student claims freedom of speech violation

Posted: Updated:
UNIVERSITY CENTER, MI (WNEM) -

The gay and lesbian rights issue is a hot-button topic across the country, and on Tuesday night, the debate made its way to Mid-Michigan.

A flag on the wall of Delta College's library is the center of controversy. A flag that promotes lesbian and gay rights.

"I'm not against gays having liberties and freedoms, but marriage is between a man and a woman and the commitment of God," said Mike McRoberts, a student at Delta College.

McRoberts opposes marriage between gays and lesbians. Because of that, he wants to hang a flag that exhibits his beliefs that marriage should be between a man and a woman. He claims he was denied his free speech rights when he was told by library employees he could not hang it next to the gay rights flag.

"I feel like my constitutional right to free speech and display was kind of ignored," said McRoberts.

On Tuesday night, he went to the Delta College Board of Trustees with concerns that his rights are being violated. Delta College President Jean Goodnow told TV5 after the meeting Tuesday night, it was the first time she heard about the complaint.

"We're definitely going to look into it. I wasn't aware at all that this was an issue with a student and was not aware he hadn't taken it to any administrators so we're going to take a look at it right away," said Goodnow.

McRoberts said he is OK with the response he got from Goodnow and the board Tuesday night. Count on TV5 as this unfolds.
