WNEM has received word that both the southbound and northbound lanes of Interstate 75 near Birch Run are back open after a tanker crash had shut down the highway for several hours.

The tanker flipped over in the northbound lane just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

Dow Chemical said the truck was hauling around 45,000 pounds of acrylic acid, and a hazmat unit has contained the spill.

Authorities say the driver of a tanker truck and four firefighters who were at the scene have been released from a hospital. reports they were checked out as a precaution after they were exposed to the hazardous chemical following Sunday's crash.

Officials said the semi-truck swerved to avoid a fire truck that was blocking the roadway for a separate incident.

Firefighters made it to scene quickly because the tanker overturned near the scene of a car fire that had just been extinguished.

Birch Run Fire Department Lt. Keith Fobear says the five didn't have any symptoms related to the exposure and were released later Sunday. Fobear says most of the acid stayed in the tanker, but some leaked out.

The accident also prompted the evacuation of the Birch Run Outlet Center and Cinema Hollywood.
