BASEHOR, KS (KCTV) -

A Basehor-Linwood High School student was killed and her brother injured in crash a half-mile west of Basehor Tuesday morning.

Tristan Hayes, 16, of Tonganoxie, was driving an SUV on U.S. Highway 24/40 near 166th Street about 7:30 a.m. when he failed to yield to the driver of a semi-truck, police said.

The semi hit the SUV in the front passenger side door.

Tristan and his younger sister, 15-year-old Shealyn Hayes, who was in the passenger seat, were taken to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Shealyn died a short time later from her injuries.

Both students were wearing their seatbelts.

The Basehor-Linwood School District has counselors available for students and staff.
