A 6-year-old girl who didn't return home after school had gone to a neighbor's house.
A bit of miscommunication caused initial conflicting reports, but Amia Walker was found safe with a neighbor and no foul play was involved.
However, the girl's mother has been arrested, KCK police tell KCTV5. Police are not saying why she was arrested.
A detective told a woman involved in the search for the missing girl that dog feces covered the residence and the home was unfit for a child, along with other issues.
The Kansas City Star reported that the girl has been placed in the care of a Kansas social worker. Police told KCTV5 that the girl is safe, but declined to say whether she was released to a family member or was placed in state custody.
About 5:45 p.m., a representative for the girl's school district said she was found and was with police. This was 45 minutes after the media had reported she was missing and an Amber Alert was to be issued.
In actuality, authorities said Amia had gone to a neighbor's house, which is what she was told to do on Wednesdays when she got out of school early.
Neighbors told KCTV5 that the girl goes to the homes of one of two neighbors after school. On this day, the girl apparently went to her own duplex. A neighbor saw the girl alone and decided for her safety to take care of her. The woman had errands to run, so she took the girl with her.
In that time, she was reported missing, and officers responded to the area of North 76th Terrace and Walker Avenue. The area is southeast of Parallel Parkway and North 78th Street.
She was reported missing about 3:45 p.m., and police declined to say who reported her missing.
The neighbor eventually returned home with the girl once her errands were completed. The woman said she had stopped allowing her own young daughter to go to the girl's home because she was concerned about some of the "traffic" coming and going from the home.
David Smith, the KCK School District spokesman, said Amia attends Claude Huyck Elementary School. Smith said he believes she got off the bus at the right stop, but didn't make it home.
