New plans for former Tuscola Re-entry Center

CARO, MI (WNEM) -

A shuttered prison might be the perfect spot for a new type of inmate.

Tuscola County is considering a plan to put elderly people still in the system inside a vacant facility near Caro.

Wednesday night, county commissioners brought up the idea of turning the former Tuscola Re-entry Center into a prison for elderly inmates.

Elderly inmates make up about 2.5 percent of the inmate population.

Commissioners also say reopening the center and putting it to any kind of use is a priority, both to create jobs and bring people back to the community.
