A local lawmaker is hoping to help ease the pain of hospital bills by introducing legislation that would make those bills more transparent.
He's pushing for legislation that would outline how expensive certain procedures are, before you have them done.
Michigan Sen. Joe Hune said hospitals should be up front about their prices, even providing a list of charges that hospitals use to bill you.
Hune represents Michigan's 22nd District, which covers Livingston, Shiawassee and portions of southern Ingham County.
Shawn Skelton was caught off guard when he opened his mailbox. Medicals bills from a recent emergency room visit are adding up and he had no idea it would cost this much.
"Weeks later, I get a bill for $6,000 in the mail and it's really hard to figure out how to budget that," said Skelton.
Skelton likes the idea of the new legislation. He learned he has a heart condition during that recent emergency room visit. He will have surgery and tests so he expects more medical bills and he knows it will be expensive.
Hune is even asking people to submit their medical bills to help make his case.
