Maricopa County Vector Control says the weather plays an important role in determining the type and amount of pests in and around your home.

"The warmer the season is, the wetter the season is, that plays into how many pests and insects are going to be around," said David Guerrieri, Maricopa County Vector Control supervisor.

It's important everyone does their part to help eliminate mosquitoes for one very important reason-  the West Nile Virus.

"We've had one test positive this year (in the east Valley). And we're still in the early testing stages, but we do have one so far," said Guerrieri.

When it comes to preventing mosquitoes near your home, the number one suggestion is to remove their main breeding source - stagnant water.

"It could be a tire, it could be a flower pot, it could be a bottle cap filled with water that gets repeatedly filled by sprinklers or something, so they can breed in anything," Guerrieri said.

As far as roof rats, the best way to get rid of them is to eliminate their food source.

"Any fruit that's lying on the ground, any fruit that's up on the trees, as soon as that gets ripe, get rid of it.  And you want to clean up any place where they may be able to spend the night," said Guerrieri.

Although rats don't spread disease directly, they do spread it mechanically.

"E. coli, salmonella, they go stepping in garbage in garbage and stuff, then they transfer it to your countertops, then you go put your sandwich on top of that countertop, then you can get salmonella and e coli," added Guerrieri.

If you have problems with these pests, especially the mosquitoes, you can call County Vector Control.  Often times they'll come out, since mosquitoes pose a potential health risk.
