Security procedures increased at Great Lakes Loons games

Posted: Updated:
MIDLAND, MI (WNEM) -

In an effort to improve safety at Great Lakes Loons home games, security procedures have changed at the gates. Fans who bring bags to the games must show security personnel what is inside.

"Really, what we're trying to prevent is someone causing really kind of a large-scale destruction or devastation, and I think this accomplishes that goal," said Great Lakes Loons President Paul Barbeau.

Barbeau said he believes checking all bags will improve the safety inside the stadium.

"We can fit over 5,000 people here, and it's our job to keep them safe. We take that job very, very seriously," said Barbeau.

The policy was enacted at the Loons game on Wednesday night.  Fans like Margaret and John Muste don't have any problem with it.

"I don't think it will ever happen in Midland, but nobody every thinks it will in their hometown, so it's just safety and it's OK," said Margaret Muste.

"In lieu of what happened in Boston, I think it makes sense to do this," said John Muste.

At the gate, security crews will ask the guests to open their bags and shuffle things around as they look for potential threats.

Barbeau said security procedures are constantly studied, and he believes this will be a good fit as he said safety is the no. 1 concern.
