1 person killed in crash involving Williamson Co. bus

FRANKLIN, TN (WSMV) -

A Columbia man was killed when the Jeep he was driving collided with a school bus Thursday morning in Williamson County.

Jesus Diaz de Leon, 42, died in the wreck about 7 a.m. on Columbia Pike near Kittrell Road involving a bus that was heading to Independence High School.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the Jeep was traveling eastbound on Kittrell Road when it either failed to stop or pulled out in front of the bus, which was traveling southbound on Columbia Pike.

The bus struck the driver's side door of the Jeep, causing the Jeep to flip one time and trapping the driver inside.

De Leon was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the bus had minor injuries.

A trooper investigating at the scene said alcohol was present in the Jeep, but it is unknown if the driver had been drinking. A blood-alcohol test has been requested, THP said.

The bus driver was not cited, and charges are not expected, THP said.

There were a total of 19 people on the school bus, including the driver, and only one passenger reported any injuries.

Extra counselors were sent to the high school in case the students needed them, according to a district spokeswoman.
