Bear cub euthanized after being shot in Farmington

FARMINGTON, CT (AP) -

A bear cub has been euthanized after being seriously wounded by a shot fired from a pellet gun in the yard of a Farmington home.

Dwayne Gardner, a spokesman with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says the homeowner told officers he shot the black bear Wednesday because he thought it was about to attack his dog, who was tied up in the yard.

Gardner says the man told officers he meant only to scare the bear, which was in the yard with its mother and another cub.

Gardner says the sow and second cub were tranquilized and relocated, but the injured cub had been paralyzed and had to be put down.

Gardner says the homeowner acted legally and no charges will be filed.
