GROTON, CT (WFSB) -

Officials determined there is no threat after a suspicious package was discovered during a random vehicle inspection at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton Thursday afternoon.

Base officials said the package was found in a vehicle trying to enter the base near Gate 1 around 2:30 p.m.

After the package was found, security measures at the base were increased and inbound and outbound traffic were allowed at Gate 1.

"Essential personnel" were only being allowed to enter the base at this time. As of 4:45 p.m., the main and Gate 1 is open to the public.

The package was evaluated by the Connecticut State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team and determined it was not a threat.

"The base appreciates the patience and understanding of all Navy members and patrons as this issue was being resolved," said Chris Zendan, the public affairs officer for the base.
