Avoid buying a recalled car

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

It's something we all have to do at some point: Find a new set of wheels.

Many look for a car that looks good, has a nice interior, gets good mileage, all at the right price. To get that deal we often head to a used car dealer, but more and more people are buying cars with mechanical problems, putting you and your family's safety at risk.

Did you know some of those cars are up for recall, possibly ending up in the hands of an unsuspecting customer.

That's what happened to Delbert Letson.

"My son has got one and we're having a little problem with that," said Letson.

Letson didn't do a background check, saying he's never had problems before when buying a used car at his favorite dealership. Now he says his kid is having a tough time get the recall taken care of.

"There is a recall on the switches in the doors and they aren't doing a whole lot to it. So they won't do anything for us," said Letson.

People like Letson aren't alone. Carfax spokesman Larry Gamache says used cars being sold with open recalls on them is a growing problem here in the midwest.

According to Gamache, used cars subject to recall increased by 25% over the past year throughout the region.

"We saw an alarming rise in the number of vehicles that were offered for sale in the state of michigan with an open recall,: said Gamache.

The I-Team sifting through dozens of vin numbers we obtained during visits to various car lots. WNEM used the carfax database to find at least three cars with recalls.

Should you be worried if one of these cars catch your eye? No, not necessarily but a former car salesman told us you have to do your homework. Yes a recalled car can sometimes slip through the cracks.

Gamache says if you are buying a used car you need to get the facts before spending your hard-earned cash. "Make sure you ask for the carfax vehicle history report and get you're car checked by a qualified mechanic," says Gamache.

Based on his son's experience, that's something Letson says he'll do from now on.

"I'll make sure that i get a carfax on it whenever i buy a used car again," said Letson.
