MOUNT PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -

A Mount Pleasant homeowner made a terrifying discovery Friday morning while going through "some old stuff."

The resident at a home on Bertshire, on the city's east side, found a black hand grenade with the pin in it and copper wire wrapped around it. The homeowner immediately called 911 and Mount Pleasant police and an area bomb squad responded to the scene.

A family member took the photo to the right showing the grenade. A quick search for that shape of grenade turns up a similar looking Japanese hand grenade, called a Type 99, used during World War II.

"[I was] surprised, flabbergasted," said Mary Bowers upon discovering the grenade. "It has been in our house for a long, long time and nothing has happened. So, I guess that's not to say there can't be a first time."

The good news is the bomb squad says the grenade wasn't active.
