Woman saved from Saginaw Bay after sailboat capsized

HURON COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A Hemlock woman was rescued from hypothermic conditions after her boat capsized in the Saginaw Bay. A neighbor alerted the Huron County Sheriff's Office just before 10 a.m. Saturday.

The Huron County Sheriff's Office says a neighbor reported seeing a woman about half a mile off shore. Her 10-foot sailboat capsized after it took on water.

Huron County deputies responded in an airboat. They said the woman was wearing a life jacket.

The victim is identified as 42-year-old Phyllis Meek, of Hemlock. Deputies said Meek was hypothermic when they pulled her out of the water. She was transported to Scheurer Hospital for treatment.

The sheriff's office wants to stress that extra caution needs to be observed when boating this time of year. Even though the air temperatures were in the 60s this morning, water temperatures are still cold. It only took a little more than 30 minutes for the victim to reach a state of hypothermia.
