Suspected shoplifter leads police on chase down Bay Road
SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -
A Monday morning police chase down Saginaw Township's Bay Road ended with a short foot chase in a field behind the Mackinaw Academy.
Police were called around 10 a.m. after a man was allegedly caught shoplifting at Kohl's near Bay and Tittabawassee roads. A Saginaw County Sheriff's deputy tried to box the man's vehicle in at the Kohl's parking lot, but the man was able to flee.
The Sheriff's deputy radioed for assistance and officers from Saginaw Township responded. A pursuit ensued south down Bay Road. Police would not say what speeds were reached.
Authorities said the man was throwing stolen clothes out the car window as he fled.
As the suspect vehicle reached Bay and Shattuck, the suspect lost control of his car, jumped the curb while trying to turn on Shattuck, and caused a tire to blow. The suspect then drove down the sidewalk a few blocks on the blown tire and finally turned in behind the Mackinaw Academy, formerly Plainfield Elementary School. The car made it into a field behind the school and that's when police said the man jumped out. Officers in hot pursuit caught up to him quickly.
The suspect is in the custody of the Saginaw County Sheriff's department. Authorities tell TV5 the suspect had a prior arrest for ramming a Michigan State Police car at Midland and Tittabawassee roads in the past.
